Qualias’s Garden Scarves blowing in an imaginary wind. Just released designs.
This book is a delight, erudite and educational. Easy to read, easy to like, and easy to look at. The photos have a textured painterly look that grabbed me immediately. The text flows playfully, prodding the pictures and holding them up and pointing things out. It feels like banter, like a visit to a gallery with a friend. I came out refreshed and enthusiastic. Forget photography and smart phones. This is the best book on design I’ve ever read.
I have enlivened the cover of my novella Yesterday Makers by spinning the atomic brain. An unexpected night and day effect emerged, since the lighting rotated with the brain. You can see a high resolution version on my Vimeo page.
Another animation of draping cloth. This time, Qualia’s Cave scarf lands on three crystal balls (red, green, and blue) that stand on a glassy display table. You can see all scarf designs at Russell.pictures. The Qualia designs are leaky and hallucinogenic and inspired by the main character, Qualia Merlin, in my novella Yesterday Makers.
Here is my Qualia’s Parrots Scarf landing on a gilded cage. The main parrot, griffin-like and imperious, drapes across the golden bars, faintly echoing the old thaumatrope of a bird and cage (a spinning disk with a drawing of a bird on one side and a cage on the other; due to persistence of vision, the bird appears trapped in the cage). Slightly sinister, too, to cover an empty cage with the likeness of a bird…
